Volunteer perks: trip to Crystal Bay and Thursday night bonfires

Every week the staff at the Green Lion Turtle Conservation Center took us on a field trip to Crystal Bay. Crystal Bay is a beautiful beach that is great for snorkeling, swimming, and surfing. The beach is about a thirty minute “taxi” ride (the back of a pick-up truck) from the conservation center. Because Nusa Penida is not a tourist hot spot (yet…), there were hardly any tourists at the beach, mostly locals.
Look at this beach!

And if this doesn’t do it for you, there is a secret beach that you can hike to! I hiked there my first week. It is about a fifteen minute hike to get there, and it so worth it.

After the beach, we would stop at Meal House 2-in-1, a small cafe ran by a couple. We’d usually order smoothies or milkshakes. Apparently they have legendary garlic bread too.

We also had weekly Thursday night bonfires. The Coconut Beach Warung would open up their cafe for us and we would get to have dinner there. They made these deep fried chicken burgers for the volunteers who could eat gluten, but they made me a really tasty chicken soup with rice! ❤ We took a lot of group pictures and hung out while eating our tasty food.

After dinner, we would go around the fire and talk about what we got out of volunteering and provide suggestions on ways that they could improve the volunteer experience. Then, our main coordinator Agus would play guitar for us.

I liked how they took us to the beach and had a bonfire for us every week. It was a great way to socialize with the other volunteers and see something new. As great as the turtles are, it was nice to get a break from them and do something different.

Next time on the blog, I’ll talk about my weekend touring Nusa Penida!
